From SAS: Below is our outline for the workshop:
Following our presentation of design roles at SAS, we will begin the activity.
We will describe the 3 R&D design roles they will get a taste of: Accessibility, UX, and Visual Designer.
We will give the students an option to pick from 2 tasks that use a Weather application/website.
- Use a mobile Weather app to easily check the current temperature/weather conditions, and the forecast for later in the evening as well as tomorrow.
- Use a Weather app on the browser to investigate deeper into the conditions of an oncoming cold front bringing in severe storms the next few days. The goal of this investigation is to analyze the weather conditions to better prepare for the storms.
We will then introduce the students to the 3 personas they will all get a chance to design for.
- Average user (no physical constraints)
- Low-vision user
- Color blind user or no vision user
We will group the students into groups of 3 and assign each student their first persona. The activity will be broken up into 3 stages.
- Stage 1: The students will begin defining the requirements for their persona as an Accessibility designer. This will most likely be referencing the workshop resources we provide and creating a list of some examples of designs that accommodate these requirements.
- After about 10-15 min to define these requirements, students will then swap with each other and exchange information for the next stage.
- Stage 2: The students will create lo-fi task-flows as UX designers. They will pick 1 of the tasks we provided. After about 30 min, the students will swap again with their other group member. They will exchange both the Accessibility requirements and the UX task-flows information.
- Stage 3: The students will take both the Accessibility requirements and the UX task-flows and create mid-fi designs on their computers as Visual Designers.
After about 30 min, we will have an open discussion to reflect on the activity and have a Q&A with us for another 15-20 min.
Is there a shared drive you have for the class that the resources for the workshop can be posted to for the students to access during the workshop? Also, I’m assuming the students will have their computers, but just in case please remind them that they will need them to access the workshop resources.
