TWO IDEAS
Each student is to develop TWO quality ideas as proposal for a brand. That is, an entity / interest in which you can define as a business, organizations, initiative, event, etc. Of course, details to come later. For now, develop this entity, independently. In general, you should reference the structuring touchpoints from the ideation sheet – but with the main points made explicit, is to describe in a few sentences. Making the general theme – area of interest, clear. (Your audience intended is captured in this description. So, the proposal is perhaps more narrative in form). THESE TWO IDEAS, AS ARTICULATE / WRITTEN OUT, ARE REQUIRED – TO BE ASSESSED. AND POSTED TO THE DESIGNATED G-FOLDER WITH YOUR NAME, AS IDEA 1 AND 2.
SPEED DATING
Each student will present the two ideas to the class. First map the theme to the SPEED DATING CHART. Format: a thirty second pitch for each idea. Then next student, repeat. The chart will help you / us visualize where there is common interest, and perhaps who you should speak with – Speed-date.
The quality of your ideas should solicit interest among your peers in the speed-dating session below. Speed-dating? (See speed-dating in Universal Design Methods, concept 79). Used here, maybe an unfortunate UX social analogy – but better to be picked (accepting the invite or not) than still need to be picked. This, ideally, has-to-do with the quality of YOUR idea. The power of your idea to invite partnerships.
9/24 Schedule
1:30 – Start of class, ideas are already mapped to SPEED DATING CHART.
1:40 – start 30-second (blitzkrieg style) pitches. 2 x 30 sec.
2:20 – Discuss patterns observed in the proposal, as a group, with professor
2:30 – online private review of all posted ideas, (2 from each student – typed!)
2:45 – Make any quick revisions to your two design problems and / or opportunities – responding to the suggestions provided, as necessary. Clarify intent, for example, business? (how will it likely sustain itself), program, organization, etc. Though, details to be determined later, in the development phase.
3:00 – Break.
3:15 – speed-date session begins
Spend short periods of time in multiple small groups (3 to 5) – exploring the ideas of others as well as “selling” your ideas, eventually leading to a determined team of 3 to go forward. Repeat. We will structure the dating activity, so that you can compare multiple design concepts in quick succession. For example, every five minutes, rotations. Maybe across multiple studio spaces (so we can hear ourselves, but local / near by). These ‘dates’ (as idea ‘flirts’) should serve to solicit interests from other potential collaborators in YOUR ideas, or vice-versa.
4:00 speed-dating completion goal:
Teams have started (at least) to declare members. All projects are collaborative. Minimum / maximum group = 3 (11 groups). Your instructors / TA await you for 5-minute consultation settings at the time of your choosing. We will have sign-up slots to ensure that each team meets with at least one instructor between 4:00 and 5:00. These are “short” meetings, providing further guidance for next meet deliverables. Touch upon Homework, for next meets: See BISd framework page (to be posted).
5:45: studio day ends.
